The name Washington Sundar might ring a bell straight off the bat (pun intended). It could be because you saw this tall, lanky teenager play for the popular IPL franchise Pune, or better yet, because you just saw him in Indian colours picking up his first wicket for the senior team.

Here are some more facts about India’s new young gun-

I       He was born into a family of cricketers

Washington Sundar hails from Chennai, born just before the turn of the century in 1999. He belongs to a family of cricketers, with his sister a regular for the TN women’s team and his dad a Ranji player. No second guesses on Washington’s career choice.

II       He started out with cricket rather young

He started playing cricket at a very tender age and was part of league cricket at the age of 10. He started with the 5th division, hopped to 3rd and straight onto 1st division when he was just 13 years old. His skill was evident right from the start.

III      Washington was already an Indian Star

It gets a little ridiculous when a 19 year old Indian debutant has “younger days” to talk about, but Washington Sundar fails to disappoint here too. Along with the impressive record he holds for being only the seventh youngest cricketer to play for the country at this level, he has also represented the blues at the U-19 level only in 2016.

IV      Washington was called in to replace Ravichandran Ashwin

“A tall off spinner from Chennai who started his career off as a batsman”.

No, I am not talking about Ravichandran Ashwin. It is still the man of the hour Washington Sundar who was drafted into the RPSG side and selected by the Indian national side as an all rounder. He came on to the franchise as a replacement for the then injured Ashwin and did a fine job, with a particularly crisp performance in qualifier 1 against Pune’s Maharashtrian rivals, Mumbai.

V             Washington Sundar is a domestic giant

Notably so, he was the highest run-scorer and second highest wicket taker in the second edition of TNPL,with 459 runs averaging 76.5 at a strike-rate of 154.54 and 15 wickets at 12.73 along with an  economy rate of 6.16.  He also has a Ranji hundred against his name, blasting 159 against Tripura.

VI             His name is a tribute!

Sundar, F/O Washington Sundar decided to name him so, as a token of respect to his own mentor P.D Washington who used to spend a lot of time watching and helping M. Sundar with his cricket.

“I was poor and he would buy uniform for me, pay my school fee, get me books, take me to the ground in his cycle and constantly encourage me, I decided to name him Washington in memory of the man who had done so much for me,” revealed Washington’s father.

VII           Washington made a Yo-Yo comeback!

Sources reveal that Washington was in line to debut against Australia in the T20 series but lost out as he failed to clear the Yo-Yo fitness test. Washington however did not give up, came back to ace the test and earned a call-up to the Indian ODI side.

Know more about the Yo-Yo fitness test and why it is keeping Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh out of the Indian side in this video!

Washington Sundar hasn’t wasted any time with niceties. He has come out of the blocks galloping and has wowed the global arena. What limits he reaches, and what journeys he embarks upon are all yet to be written by him. If the following pages are any way similar to the first few, the world is in for a treat.
