While CSK was being missed for 2 years, T20 cricket didn’t take a hit in the southern state with a homegrown league called TNPL. The cricket carnival arrives again but this time with a joyous flare after a CSK victory. The stakes are high as the IPL scouts have their eyes on these domestic tournaments and extraordinary consistent performances could well lead to an IPL call up.

This is how all teams look like after the 2018 draft of TNPL:

Dindigul Dragons

Chaturved NS, Hari Nishaanth C, Anirudh Sita Ram B, Mohammed M, Rohit R, Adithya Arun, Abhinav M, Silambarasan, Trilok Nag, Yazh Arun Mozhi, Sujendran M, Kaushik J, N Ramakrishnan, Ra Aravind, Nivethan Radhakrishnan, Varun M Totatri

Retained: R Ashwin, N Jagadeesan and R Vivek

A lot will rely on the captain, Ravi Ashwin who had a decent stint as Punjab captain in the IPL and also silenced his critics by adding a new dimension to his bowling in Leg spin. However, Ashwin will only be available for the first 10 days of the tournament owing to national commitments.

N Jagadeesan, Tamil Nadu wicket keeper will lead the side in his absence. Having been a part of the champion IPL team CSK, Jagadeesan would’ve learnt a lot from the likes of MS and Fleming.

IDream Karaikudi Kaalai:

Dinesh Karthik, Aniruda S, V Yo Mahesh, R Kavin, L Suryap Prakash, Lakshman, Aaditya V, Kishan Kumar S, Radhakrishnan, Maan K Bafna, Ashwath Mukunthan, Swaminathan S, Ajith Kumar T, S Ganesh, R Srinivasan, P Murugesh

Retained: R Rajkumar, M Shajahan and S Mohan Prasath

Karaikudi Kaalai, is one of the most formidable batting units this year which boasts the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Anirudha Srikanth and M Shajahan.

Dinesh Karthik has been in magnificent touch in recent times following up on his heroics in the Nidahas trophy earlier this year. He captained KKR to a successful campaign scoring 498 runs at an average of 55.3 at a strike rate of 147.His services will be missed for the first week of the tournament as he is a part of the squad touring England.

M Shajahan, TNPL’s own hero had a great season last year averaging over 50 at a strike rate of 145, is a player to watch out for. He provides great stability to the middle order.

Washington Sundar, the highest run scorer in TNPL history has not been in the best of form. He had a good IPL in 2017, which carved his path into the Indian team. This young all rounder does have a lot of potential and his RCB stint would have helped him understand his game better. He however will not be available for the first week of the league owing to his India A commitment.

UPDATE – Washington Sundar has been injured during a warm up session in England and hence may not be available for play in TNPL.

R Sai Kishore, is a tall left arm bowler who impressed in the 2017 season. He is the leading wicket taker in TNPL. He has been a regular in the Tamil Nadu side. R Satish is an experienced player who brings a lot to the table. He has match winning all round abilities.

His exploits at the domestic level earned him a place in the national side. He is a part of the India A squad touring England and will hence join the team a week after the tournament kicks off.

Chepauk also has an extremely skilled wrist spinner in Murugan Ashwin. He was a part of the Pune squad which made the final in 2017 and he contributed greatly to the team’s success. However, he is coming off a dismal series with RCB and will look to redeem himself in this edition.

Abhinav Mukund has been on the fringes of the Indian team for a long time now and has been a consistent performer in Ranji. The Tamil Nadu captain didn’t have a good Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy scoring just 22 in the three innings he played.

R Rohith, one of only 3 centurions in TNPL history will certainly play an important role in the batting department. T Natarajan, one of the finds of TNPL has been one of the most economical bowler at just 5.70 per over. His exploits also earned him an IPL contract with KXIP in 2017.

Retained: B Indrajith, Bharath Shankar and K Vignesh

India’s premium test opener Murali Vijay will be a part of Trichy Warriors. He will be looking to make the most of this opportunity to get back into the IPL scheme of things as he played just one game for CSK this season.

Bharat Shankar has the highest score in TNPL history of 112*. He is a great batsman and an asset to the Trichy team. Tamil Nadu pacer Aswin Crist, will be a potent weapon in the bowling department. He scalped 35 wickets in the 2017-18 Ranji season.
